Two set backs have taken place today during CyberArt.
1) Everyone in my group dropped the course: This is somewhat scary every member of my group has dropped the CyberArt class because of varying reasons (not enough time, not interested etc. etc.)
2) The paper-plate failed: My attempt at creating the paper-plate speaker failed (as somewhat expected). After some research we found that the speaker needed a magnetic field, but after using a magnet the speaker still failed to emit sound.
The good news
The cheap (annoying) stuffed singing stuffed animal I bought from food lion proved to be an interesting hack. I tore the stuffed animal into piece (and with the help of Jiun) I was able to get the headphones to play (with bugs) over the heap (annoying) stuffed singing stuffed animal’s speaker.
Since the project is due next week, the next post will demonstrate the project.
Last week we were assigned our first project a House-ware/Hardware Hack.
Description
Essentially the purpose of this project is to take an object from our apartments, homes, and/or dorms and turn that object into something different. I know this description is vague… but the project has a broad scope of possible solutions.
Our project (team 5)
For our project our team decided that we will try to build high-def speaker out of just a paper-plate, a penny, headphones, and masking tape.
If and when this fails (no team has ever gotten the paper-plate speaker to work correctly) I bought a cheap (annoying) toy stuffed animal from food lion that sings songs (should make for an interesting hack).
Before I begin discussing, demonstrating, sketching, and developing “CyberArt” I think that is important to define “CyberArt”. Since this is my first experience with “CyberArt” I’m going to use Wikipedia to help us define the term.
Given that
According to Wikipedia Cyber is “often used in names coined for “electronic” or computer-related counterparts of a pre-existing product or service. Of the three, virtual is generally considered to be misused in this context.”
Whereas Wikipedia defines Art as “the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the sense or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music and literature.”
Therefore
CyberArt is the study of the use of “electronic or computer-related counterparts of a pre-existing product or service” to create a “process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the sense or emotions.”
Tomorrow we’ll look at what Dr. Harrison defines as “CyberArt”…
This is a picture of my fiance (Rebeccca Dam) and I at TGI Friday's for her roommate's birthday.
This is a web log (blog) category of my experiences in CS4984 Cyber Art at Virginia Tech. Note that blogs associated with this category will be categorized as “CyberArt.”
I have created this blog to record my own commentary, analysis, description of events, and multimedia. When I say “multimedia,” I mean that at times I may add some audio, a graphic, video, or photograph to augment a particular entry.
This blog’s purpose is three-fold
1) It’s for a grade: Let’s be honest I want an A in CyberArt, and creating a great blog is a way to edge me closer to that goal.
2) I’ve always wanted to write a blog: Since even before the term “blog” was coined I have always wanted to start a blog (I actually had a blog for a couple of months three or four years ago).
3) I love web design: Creating this blog was a great excuse to design a new website.
Tomorrow We’ll talk about what “CyberArt” actually is…
